There are multiple causes for infertility. It affects both men and women alike. According to the World Health Organization – WHO, 30% of cases are due to female factors, 30% due to male factors, 30% due to both female and male factors and 10-15% due to unknown factors.
The evaluation for infertility usually takes no longer than a menstrual cycle, meaning about 1 month. If more specialized tests are needed your doctor will tell you the timeframe.
Females:
Hormonal testing (Follicle Stimulating Hormone – FSH, Estradiol, Antimullerian Hormone – AMH) and if needed (Prolactin, Thyroid hormones, among others).
Transvaginal pelvic ultrasound to evaluate the uterus and ovaries.
3D hysterosonogram or Diagnostic Hysteroscopy to evaluate the inside of the uterine cavity and rule out anatomical defects such as fibroids or polyps.
Hysterosalpingography, a radiological study that evaluates the patency of the Fallopian Tubes.
Cervical cultures to rule out infections.
Males:
Semen Analysis.
Hormonal studies if needed.
The specialist may recommend other complementary tests depending on your individual history.
Hormonal studies (FSH, Estradiol, AMH) are performed in your cycle day 2-4 (usually with your menses)
Transvaginal pelvic ultrasound and antral follicle count are performed in your cycle day 2-4 (usually with your menses)
3D Hysterosonogram and Hysterosalpingography are performed in your cycle day 5-9.
Cervical culture may be performed at any point during your cycle except days when you have your menses.

Depending on your personal characteristics, diagnosis and medical history your specialist will recommend your treatment options, usually starting with the least invasive options and if there is no success then more complex options such as IVF or ICSI. Each couple is different, but communication with your physician and the team is of utmost importance.
Depending on the treatment it can take anywhere between 8 days and 18 days before the Intrauterine Insemination or IVF.
According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine – ASRM, pregnancy rates with low complexity treatments such as IUI are approximately 10-15% per cycle, high complexity treatments such as IVF can have >60% per cycle. This will vary according to age and individual characteristics.
